Pam and Julie had just changed out of their school clothes and were helping their mother with chores around the house when the front doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it,” Julie shouted.

“No you don’t, young lady,” Sherry stopped her. “You go right on cleaning up that mess. I’ll get it.”

Wiping her hands on a towel, Sherry hurried to open the front door.

“Good afternoon. Are you Mrs. Jacobs?” asked Donna Masters, well dressed and carrying a large handbag, appearing all bubbly innocence.

“Yes I am. What can I do for you?”

“I’m Carol Harding,” Donna lied, “the interior decorator. Am I too early?”

“I’m afraid I don’t understand. Are you sure you have the right place?”

“Oh, yes, very sure. Didn’t Mr. Jacobs tell you I was coming?”

“No he did not. What exactly are you supposed to do?”

“My goodness, how embarrassing. I can only guess that Mr. Jacobs wanted to surprise you. Now I’ve spoiled everything. He hired me to completely redecorate the upstairs bedrooms. Would it be all right...? I mean, if I would be in the way, or anything...”

“No, of course not. I just wish he wouldn’t pull stunts like this. Please, come in.”

Behind Sherry, Pam and Julie looked on.

“Well now, I’ll bet you must be Pamela, and you must be Julie, right?”

“Right,” they answered together.

“You are both as pretty as your father said. And I hope you will like your new rooms when I’m through.”

“If you’ll come with me, I’ll show you where everything is,” Sherry offered. “You girls get back to work.” Sherry led Donna upstairs.

“This is our room, the girls share a room at the end of the hall. There are two more bedrooms, one guest room and one we use as a storage for odds and ends.”

“I know how it is. I have one of those rooms myself. What a beautifully large double bed. I suppose you could both sleep in that bed for hours without bumping into each other.”

“I suppose,” Sherry responded, sounding a little puzzled. “What was it you wanted, exactly?”

“Just a chance to look around, measure the rooms, that sort of thing. I need to know what they look like now, before I can come up with new ideas. Colors, arrangements, you know. I really won’t be but a minute.”

From downstairs Julie called out, “Mom, Pam’s trying to boss me around.”

“Just like sisters to fuss, isn’t it?” Donna said, sweetly. “My sister and I used to fuss all the time. She’s dead now.”

“I’m sorry. How sad for you. Will you excuse me for a moment? The girl’s room is at the end of the hall.” Sherry left to go downstairs.

Donna crossed the bedroom going immediately to a chest of drawers and began to search through it. Finding Sherry’s lingerie drawer, she carefully sorted through everything, removed a black lace bra and put it in her purse. Finding some of Carl’s things in a second drawer she removed a small, prettily wrapped package from her purse and placed it inside among his socks. She then left the bedroom.

Moving quickly down the hall she looked inside the girl’s bedroom.
